The Other Two

Here are the other two concerts I had promised.

The first is the Sweetheart Sisters’ cancer funderaiser. My aunt Lucy is one of the sisters in the group. Her sister was diagnosed but was able to fight it into remission. They threw this fundraiser with their brother and a few other musicians. It was a packed house which was quite heart warming.

The second is a gallery of photos that I took on both Beatles themed nights at The Townehouse. As you can tell, the dim lighting is once again my nemesis at my favorite bar (where else can you see someone use a 50 as a slider?). One a side note, am I the only one who thinks the close up of Matt Foy kind of makes him look like the blue vampire/werewolf in Underworld?

Resolved…in part

It seems like I was able to fix the galleries, but I was not able to fix the buttons in my dashboard to activate the galleries/albums. I have no idea how I will post albums now. I guess the quickest fix would be for me to ask you to simply go to the gallery page I point out. It’ll have to do for now until I find another solution.

Technical Errors

Ugh… stupid errors. The galleries are on the fritz. I’ll get those fixed later. I need sleep!

A Busy Week…

I’ve been ridiculously busy as of late with transcripts (ah…thesis) and many other work related things, so I haven’t had time to upload the many fun photos I’ve taken in the last few weeks. I thought I’d start by adding photos from three recent concerts. The first, tonight, will be of the Dead Flowers. Matty Ralph = Mick Jagger.

Five Common Mistakes

I spoke about the 5 most common photoshop mistakes yesterday, that I have done, and Eric asked me to share them. I can’t really recreate the entire article here but I’ll list and try to explain them anyway :

1. Bad Dodge and Burn
Dodge and Burn are tools you can use in photoshop to darken or lighten areas on your photos. Unfortunately people usually go nuts and do a whole lot of it so it’s very obvious, or use a brush that is too small so it leaves streaks. This makes photos look like someone drew on them with a marker.

2. Overcooked images
Often people will over work their images to a point where it looks like a cartoon. They’ve boosted the saturation to a point where the image looks like it’s gone nuclear, they’ve over sharpened or over blurred, left noise everywhere. Always work on a copy layer of your image so that if things like noise and over saturation occur, you can just delete that layer and start again. Also, don’t over do it.

3. Colour Noise
Excessive general editing including altering levels and curves will lead to image degradation in the form of noise and posterisation. If your image is already colourful, don’t try to add too much saturation/play with the contrast or your image will look pixelated and colour burned.

4. Bad HDR
This one is more specialized as not many people use High Dynamic Range photography. It’s fun to do and can make great effects, but you really have to make sure you’re doing it right or your shadows and lights will be blotchy and you’ll have very hard edges leaving definite liens where you merged images.

5. Mono lack of contrast
“Perhaps the biggest sin of all when it comes to your black-and-white shots is the failure to pump some serious contrast in there. The same goes for your colour images too, but mono only has the contrast between tonal values to grab interest and show all the lovely detail that all black-and-white shots should have.

I have most definitely overcooked images, leaving some with colour noise, all whileburning and dodging images into crap. I haven’t done any bad HDR yet…because I haven’t done any HDR.
