Rieta and I shot a wedding this weekend for my friend Larah. Her aunt was getting married and I she asked if I could take some photos. Rieta and I spent about eight hours snapping photos and I’ve just finished touching up my half. I’m fairly satisfied with the results. I hope the groom & bride will be as well!

I have been quite sick for the last week or so. This has forced me to be more creative as I’ve had to stay in my house. I decided to try my hand at fruit photography, at board games again, playing with the sonic screwdriver again, and then was inspired by a photo I saw on digital-photography-school.com to try a new technique. The person basically took a photo of themselves holding a pin with a short depth of field and only coloured the pin. I took this idea and ran with it, shooting my brother and his business card. I blurred him heavily and added an overlay to really bring out more contrast in the b/w part. I made his card more vivid and blurred the edges. I’m fairly happy with the result.
I’ve been playing quite a bit with blur and sharpness in portraits. I simply add a level, gaussian blur, then overlay. It adds a rich dreamy texture to portraits. While not always useful (I do strive for sharp photos!) this strategy can add a layer of softness and richness of colour to some photos (like my brother & his gf sleeping here).
Recently a friend pointed out http://digital-photography-school.com . They offer some of the most useful advise for amateur photographers that is available on the net. They have tutorials for beginners and tips for even the most seasoned professionals. One aspect that particularly fascinates me are the regular homework assignments that are given. Things like “Portrait of a Person.” I think I’ll go back into their archives and try a few of their homework assignments and post them here as part of my Project365 page.
Speaking of which, it has been updated. I seem to have focused heavily on portraits in the last week or so. It’s a technique I’m striving to improve.

I’ve been trying to change the javascript for the effect that is used to view photos when you click on my thumbnails, but of course Internet explorer has made itself the bane of my existence.
The current “thickbox” with the white border is about the only effect that works, and even then some photos won’t show up properly. I’m going to look around for a solution, but otherwise I may just throw in the towel and accept that those who use Internet Explorer will never see my website properly.
